Top 7 Reasons Why People Suck at Network Marketing

Thursday
Aug062009

If you are a network marketer and you came to the point when you are nearly convinced that network marketing, in general, sucks, and making money in this business has just remained a dream that has never come true for you, read on, because I am going to reveal seven reasons why you became a starring actor in the “horror movie” called Network Marketing.

There are two types of reaction that I get from people when I share the reasons of their problem with them. People either accept the “diagnosis” of their problems in MLM and try to do something to change the situation, or they reject it trying to find someone who will please their itching ears.

Both are fine, because in both cases people make decisions for THEIR own future. After you’ve read this article you will have two choices – either to agree that you need to change some things or to reject this idea and continue struggling in your business. The truth is, however, that in order to solve a problem one has to admit there is a problem. Once the problem is identified, it is then possible to look for ways to solve it.

The ultimate goal of every serious business is to make money. It is also true for the Network Marketing Business… in theory. In reality, only about 3% of network marketers really make it to the realm of riches. Why is the failure rate so high in the network marketing industry? Is there a secret code to open the mystery door to mlm prosperity?

Well, the answer lies on the surface. But most people don’t know it is the answer. They actually walk around it every day, they stumble upon it, but for some reason they do not see it. As I mentioned before, one has to admit that the problem exists before a solution can be found.

Gazillions of network marketers struggle in this business and they do not take time to ask themselves why it happens. The problem is that we are often led by the majority, and like dead fish we float with the stream. When we see the majority of network marketers around us struggle, we accept it as a norm. But is it? Does making money in network marketing have to be that difficult that fortunes are being spent on stupid marketing techniques before pennies are earned through sweat and blood?

Well, the answer is simple: we reap what we sow. In other words, our actions, our behavior, our mindset, and the words we say to people – they determine the results we get. There is the other side of the coin though, and in marketing this is called the influence group, a group of people that determines our actions, our behavior, our mindset, and the words we say while doing business. But I am going ahead of myself here.

I believe that struggling in network marketing is already a problem of and by itself. But it is the effect, not the cause. What is the cause then your Upline won’t tell you about even if you ask? There are at least 7 reasons why people struggle in MLM. And they come one out of the other. They are interrelated, and every one of them is caused by the previous one.

Here they are expressed in one sentence: People get wrong expectations from MLM because of the wrong message sent by wrong people who teach wrong marketing system that targets wrong prospects who are wrongly pre-programmed to fail because they are provided a wrong set of marketing tools.

1. Wrong Expectations from MLM…

Promises of Instant Gratification

They arise from the pre-conceived idea that as soon as one joins a network marketing company the big bucks will flow into their pocket like a river, almost instantly. People look for instant gratification, and it is promised to them by sponsors who try to represent this lie as a truth of the last instance. This does not happen for an average Jo as quickly as promised, because it is a lie. A lie is attractive, because it is always camouflaged in the wrapping of a good idea. Who on earth does not want to make money instantly? Who does not want to make money doing nothing? Only those who know that life does not function that way. So the inexperienced fall into this trap.

2. Because of Wrong Message Sent by…

“We Are the Best…”

A significant number of network marketing ads that you can see today contain such phrases: “We have the best product!” or “We have the best compensation plan!” or “Our company is debt-free!” or “Compare us to XYZ company!”

It’s not a secret that we all want to have the best of the best – the best car, the best house, the best vacation, the best and smartest children, or to know the best way of making money, etc. But, come on, is it real? We may want anything, but the term “best” is so subjective! What is best for me is not necessarily best for you, and vice versa. But when we hear the above claims we forget about it. But this is also a lie.

Next time you hear this “best” lie, ask yourself a question: “Do they know that or they think that?” They cannot know what is best for you unless they ask you first. If you did not tell them and they did not ask you, their opinion about their product, company, or opportunity is totally subjective and has nothing to do with putting money into YOUR pocket.

3. …Wrong People Teaching…

Network marketing teems with wrong people. I do not mean to discriminate against anyone, but seriously, would you like plumbers to do heart surgeries? How about janitors defending you in the court of law? Or a baker filling a prescription for you? Do not get me wrong. I do believe in a career change. But in order to be successful in your new job or career what do you have to do? Well, a career change requires additional education.

Many people in network marketing do not take this business seriously. They never take the time to learn marketing, sales and related subjects. And because of that we have a situation when amateurs or hobbyists run the show; they teach newbies stuff that does not work.

Wrong people cannot teach you right things. When you need a computer you do not go to a pharmacy. When you need a car you do not go to a construction worker. You need a right person to advise you a right thing. Have you ever thought about why your Upline’s advices have no effect on your business? Because a wrong Upline is teaching you wrong things!

4. … Wrong Marketing System That Targets…

In order to be successful in network marketing you have to have an effective marketing system. If what you do trying to build your business only sucks money out of your pocket needing constant financing, there is something wrong with that system. With such a system your business is kind of expensive. Think about it: is it you who is supposed to supply money to your business, or is it your business that is supposed to supply money to you and your family? The answer is obvious. If your business is not self-sufficient, if it cannot support you, then your marketing system needs a drastic change.

5. …Wrong Prospects Who Are…

If you are an average network marketer, I dare to assume that your Upline teaches you to always talk to as many people as possible about your opportunity. And you aim at everything that has life and breath. And when the rejection rate goes through the roof, your Upline tells you to talk to even more people. There is a commonly accepted idea in network marketing: The more “No’s” you hear, the closer you’re approaching to that ultimate “Yes”. It is silly. The number of “No’s” is not a distance. It is just a number. And actually, do you have time to talk to the necessary number of people to finally hear that “yes”? How many people do you have to talk to? 10? 100? 1000? How do you know?

Here we come to the shocking truth: It is not you who decides who your prospect is, it is their decision who think it’s worth their time to take a look at your product or opportunity.

Chasing down family and friends, bothering people in the cold market, doing the windshield marketing is the same as for a dog to chase its own tail – it always slips away.

Who is the right prospect then? The answer is simple. It’s a person who is interested in your product or opportunity. Your job as a network marketer is to sift and sort people to find the interested ones. How to do it is a big topic by itself and is explained on my website in details. But keep the truth is not everyone is your prospect.

6. … Wrongly Pre-Programmed to Fail, Because They Are Shown…

Network marketing failure occurs because of all reasons described above. People are being pre-programmed for failure without noticing it. And how can they notice it without a business experience, marketing experience, networking experience, etc. People who are not taught these things by their Upline are guaranteed failure without being told about that. We are not going to go into the ethical aspect of this, but the reality proves that the vast majority of people coming into the network marketing business fails and quits without being able to earn a penny, because they do not receive necessary training; motivational seminars and conventions don’t count.

I had two Uplines at two different companies, and none of them cared to call me and ask me how I did. None of them ever offered me help. I realized later that they themselves were struggling in this business for years without success.

7. … Wrong Set of Marketing Tools

The effectiveness of a marketing system is determined by a set of tools chosen to achieve marketing goals. The effectiveness of your network marketing business is determined by the number of networks you build and their duplication capacity. In order to build large enough networks you have to talk to a larger number of people to find the right ones who will become your leaders.

But the commonly accepted marketing tools in network marketing create more problems than solve. Rejection is the biggest one. Rejection is the effect of chasing down everything that moves; and the common tools are cold calling, windshield marketing, bugging family, friends, and colleagues, the 3-foot rule, hype, and all that I described above.

So What?

Is it possible to create a situation when people get interested in your business and come to you without being forced to do that? Is it possible for you to attract them just like those around you are attracting you? Yes, if you agree that you need a change. And no if you are ok doing what you are currently doing.

To know the “what” (theory) of a business is one thing, but to know the “how” (practice) is totally different. I sucked at network marketing just like millions of us in this industry. But I opened my mind to research the reasons of my failure and to learning the things that truly yield financial results.

What you are going to do next in MLM is totally up to you. But if you are sick of being a total MLM failure, if you exhausted all your lead resources, and if you really want to change this situation and start seeing results within days, it is time to act differently.
